It has truly been a season of honours for Rory McIlroy with the real likelihood at year’s end of King Charles 111 bestowing a knighthood on the Northern Irishman.
First it was winning a maiden Masters and becoming only the sixth golfer to capture the coveted Grand Slam.
McIlroy was then a member of historic European Ryder Cup team with the team winning back-to-back encounters in Europe and the USA, and both under Luke Donald’s captaincy.
Today we have learned the DP World Tour has commissioned a new award – the Rory McIlroy Award – a new annual trophy named in honour of Europe’s first winner of the Career Grand Slam.

The award will be presented to the individual member of the DP World Tour who performs the best across all four Major Championships in a season.
It will be introduced for the 2026 season, with the winner being the member who cumulatively earns the most Race to Dubai points from the Masters Tournament, US PGA Championship, US Open and The Open.
“To have something named after you, that will be presented to future generations of players, is a huge honour and it is very humbling,” said McIlroy.
“It certainly means a lot to me because the DP World Tour was where I started my career. I’ve always loved playing on it and, of course, representing Europe and the Tour in the Ryder Cup.
“I’m incredibly proud to be the first European to achieve the Career Grand Slam. The Majors represent the pinnacle of our sport, and I hope my success can inspire other DP World Tour members to chase and achieve their own dreams for years to come.
“I look forward to seeing who becomes the first recipient of this new award in 2026 and it will be another very proud moment for me personally to present the trophy to them.”
McIlroy will later this week will more than likely join Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie is capturnig a seventh DP World Tour No. 1 Tour title.
Mid next month, McIlroy will be on hand at the BBCs London studios where he is favourite to be named ‘BBC Sport Personality of 2025’.
Then on the final day of the year, and in a year McIlroy has done virtually everything in golf except get back to World No. 1, we should be welcomed with news on the very last day of 2025 that King Charles 111 has honoured McIlroy so that he will be forever known as Sir Rory McIlroy.
