Saint Endreol Golf … Spectacular French Design, Superb To Play

Saint Endréol is situated between Provence and the Cote d’Azur spread out over 370 acres of unspoiled landscape that mirrors the exquisite lifestyle of Provence.

The course is located in the town of La Motte less than an hour’s drive from Nice airport and also less than a 30 klm drive from Saint Maxime on the French Riviera coastline.

Saint Endréol is a dramatic-looking 18-hole course of 5,883 metres length from the back tees,  5,789 metres off the white, 5,314 metres from the yellow tees and plays to 4,447 metres from the ladies tee and with course sporting a traditional mix of four par-3s, four par-5s playing to a par 72 off all tees.

The course was designed in 1992 by Michel Gayon of the French-based Gayon Design.

Those who know their French golf will know Gayon was the undisputed French Amateur champion from 1975 to 1985 and instead of turning professional, as he could, he instead turned his hand to golf course design.

Much of his design work has been in his native France but then in travelling to Turkey, as this journalist has done many times to report on the Turkish Airlines Open, I have been fortunate to play the Gloria New Course in Antalya and also a  Cayon design.

Some other projects of Cayon’s work include Golf Club Dakar, Sable-Solesmes Golf Club and the Golf Club Esery. These courses have also shown the versatility to hold top professional tournaments, like the Challenge Tour ( Sablé-Solesmes ) or French Pro  championship ( La Domangere ) and, of course, Saint Endréol.

Two natural features influence the golf course – the Endre river which flows through the estate and the imposing Rocher de Roquebrune.

The very imposing Rock of Roquebrune rises some 369 metres and looks out of the landscape.

The No. 1 index hole is the par-4 17th playing 387-metres off the white tees and with the ‘easiest’ or 18th index hole immediately before, the par-4 16th measuring just 292-metres from the white tees.

The course starts on a very elevated first tee and you end also playing up on a elevated 18th green.

In between the course meanders through water hazards among old umbrella pines with picturesque views of the Mediterranean’s glamorous playground along the river Endre.

If there is a signature hole it is the par-3 13th hole with its island green provides a stirring challenge.
