Charlie Woods Heads Back To The Amateur Ranks After Crashing Out Of Coznizant Classic Qualifier

It’s back to the amateur game for the time being after 15-year-old Charlie Woods, and the son of 15-time Major winning Tiger Woods, crashed out of pre-qualifying for next week’s Coznizant Classic at PGA National.

Young Woods had been one of the first to arrive at the host Lob Lake course, located close to his father’s palatial abode at Hobe Sound, and after being out in the second group, he was sadly one of the first to leave after signing for a horror 16-over-par 86 on the par-70 layout.

The PGA Tour posted an ‘X’ video of young Woods arriving, and without his father, before the video showed him being introduced on the first tee at 7.39am (local time) ahead of been seen happily walking off the opening tee with playing partners Olin Browne Jr. and Ireland’s Ruaidhri McGee.

However, Woods was soon in trouble with a pair of bogeys through four holes ahead of doubling the par-5 fifth hole.  He endured a horror hole at the par-5, 475-yard seventh in taking a ‘seven-over ’12’.  He settled to produce six pars in succession before a double at 14 and then two other bogeys for his 86.

There are five pre-qualifying sites for next week’s Cognizant Classic — formerly know as the Honda Classic.

The top 25 players and ties from each site were set to advance to a final qualifying event on Monday. From there, the top four players will make it into the tournament, taking place Feb. 29-March 3 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens and just a short drive down the I-95 from the likes of the Bears Club where the Irish duo of Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry reside.

While this qualifier didn’t go Woods’ way in his first attempt at qualifying for a PGA Tour event, it certainly provided a good experience for him going forward. He has already played in the last four PNC Championships with his father, and this past fall he finished tied for 17th at the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship and also helped his high school golf team win a state title.

The 2024 Cognizant Classic will feature a $9m purse and $1.62m to the winner with World No. 2 McIlroy being joined by Lowry, Tom Kim, Justin Rose, Matt Fitzpatrick and defending champion Chris Kirk
