McIlroy Romps His Way To Fourth Wells Fargo Triumph

Rory McIlroy heads into this coming week’s PGA Championship in the best of form after capturing a fourth Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina,

Despite finding water at the back of the green at the last in taking a double, McIlroy was in a class all his own over the final day’s play winning by a remarkable five shots thanks to a closing round of 65 for a 17-under tally.

There was loud calls of ‘Rory, Rory, Rory’ as McIlroy collected a 26th PGA Tour title and his 40th victory worldwide since turning pro in late 2007.

McIlroy celebrated US Mothers Day matching a career best of winning the Wells Fargo for a fourth occasion and doing so just some three months in capturing also a fourth Hero Dubai Desert Classic crown earlier this year.

“Coming into this week, at a golf course I am comfortable with, my golf swing feels more comfortable than it has done”, he said.

“Going to a venue next week where I have won, it feels like the stars are aligning a little bit. But I have a lot of golf to play and a lot of great players to try to beat.

“I am going into the next major of the year feeling really good about myself.”

The Northern Irishman had been level par on day four after seven holes but then played the next nine in eight under par, including a pair of eagles at the 10th and 15th holes ahead of sending his second through the green that rolled into water.  He then chipped a fourth well past the cup ahead of two-putting for his ‘6’.

Though losing some of the gloss of what could have been a seven-shot success, winning by five was still very impressive.

American Xander Schauffele, who lead going into the last day, was a distant second signing for a 71 for his 12-under tally.
