McIlroy’s Starts New Season Seeking ‘Final Piece Of The Puzzle’

“The final piece of the puzzle is trying to knock off one of those four”.

In probably his prior 17 years in pro ranks Rory McIlroy has never stated his New Year intentions as more precise as he did ahead of this week’s inaugural Dubai Invitational in Dubai.

And it was a question that has been source of much copy since last year’s Open Championship when the current World No. 2 walked off Royal Liverpool knowing that it was now 10-yards since he last won at the games highest level.

Not since 2014 and in near darkness at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky has the majors limelight shone so brightly on McIlroy.

It was his second PGA Championship victory, just weeks after capturing The Open also at Royal Liverpool while he captured a first major at the 2011 US Open and also the following year’s PGA Championship.

And McIlroy was asked his thoughts on breaking this decade-long majors winning drought ahead of this week’s DP World Tour event at the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club.

“I’m excited for the year. This is my 18th full season on tour, which is mad to think about,” he said.

“I’m as excited as I was for the first one. I think every new year, new year, new opportunities, new goals, and you know, my consistency’s really been there over the last couple years, and without winning one of the big ones, and I think that’s the final piece of the puzzle for me, especially coming out of COVID and sort of going through some dips in my game and then coming back up and playing so well the last couple years.

“The final piece of the puzzle is trying to knock off one of those four”.

That quest starts on April, 11th when he will tee-up for a 16th occasion at Augusta National.
