McGuire: Magnificent Maguire “She’s A Certified Dog”.

How good is Leona Maguire?

In her 10 Solheim Cup matches, commencing from her rookie appearance in 2021, the now 28-year-old rish golfing wonder has earned Europe 8.5 points.

After Europe was white-washed 0-4 in the opening series of matches on Friday at Finca Cortesin it was Maguire’s seven birdie haul two days later in her 4 & 3 white-wash over USA rival Rose Zhang in the second Sunday Singles match that helped inspire Europe to retain the gleaming Solheim Cup.

Of course, Spain’s own Carlota Ciganda rightfully holed the putt to ensure the trophy stays in Europe for fifth occasion in the past seven Solheim Cup encounters but there’s no denying Maguire’s worth in the side as recognised by US golfing podcast ‘No Laying Up’ who were singing Maguire’s praise.

The was after Maguire had teamed with Charley Hull for the Saturday afternoon Fourballs, and with the pair humbling rivals Nelly Korda and Ally Ewing in combining to post five winning birdies in a stunning 4 & 3 triumph.

‘Leona is just on fire!”, said the podcast.

“With Leona, this is not even the best course fit for her. It’s pretty wide off the tee and it is just set up for a bomber. She doesn’t hit it that far and it negates some of her qualities. But she is a certified dog (laughing). We certified her long ago. We didn’t neglect to mention her – she’s already been certified.”

In Maguire’s Singles match she carded three birdies for her front nine and though Zhang was not letting her away and only trailed by one at the turn, two further birdies and the unbelievable eagle chip-in at 14 sealed Zhang’s fate for Maguire to wrap-up their match with a par on the 15th.

“It was just incredible,” said an emotional Maguire.

“The Irish fans this week have just been phenomenal and it felt like I was playing at home and it was just the energy I needed for today.

“I mean, Suzann gave me a job this morning. I knew it’s going to be tough. It’s going be a tough day for the girls but important to get blue on the board early and let’s see if they can bring it home.”

Up next, is the 44th hosting of Ryder Cup and Luke Donald looking to win back the famed golden trophy off the Zach Johnson led Americans in Rome.
