Don’t Blame Me For The Trousers Says Lowry Day One Zurich Classic Of New Orleans

Shane Lowry was in an upbeat ‘Mardi Gras’ kind of mood thanks to Ian Poulter on the opening day of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Lowry and Poulter were laughing and joking, and all the time gelling superbly in the unique team format to post an eight-under-par 64 in ideal scoring conditions on the TPC Louisiana course.

Last year’s Ryder Cup team-mates were even decked out in identical dark blue shirts and ultra-bold, and what only Poulter would wear, large blue-and-white check trousers, so loud they could have done with a volume switch.

And when quizzed whose idea was the trousers, Lowry broke out in a smile remarking: “It wasn’t mine!  We’ve got a bit of green on us for tomorrow so hopefully it’ll bring some luck.

“It’s just a bit of fun, this is the last time these will ever be coming out of my wardrobe”.

This week’s fun format is just what Lowry needed after the heartache of letting slip victory four days ago at the RBC Heritage, where Lowry was leading by a shot with four holes to play but then doubled the 14th on route to missing out on the play-off by a shot.

“It’s been a long couple of months”, said Lowry. “The only thing that keeps me going this week is that I have a good partner and we had a good bit of craic out there”.

It’s the first time Lowry has teamed with Pouter, despite being team-mates late last year in Wisconsin.

The pair combined for nine birdies and just the one bogey, and with Lowry scoring six of the birdies, Poulter none and with two holes, at the first and ninth holes where they each posted a birdie.

“My putting was the key, and I’ve just been spending time on my putting, doing drills and working with my coach down in Jupiter”, said Lowry.

“I’m trying not to think about it too much. I’ll just keep going and hopefully one of these weeks I’ll be standing there with a trophy”.

The all-American duo of Matthew NeSmith and Taylor Moore equalled the tournament record to be the early clubhouse leaders with a combined 12-under 60.
