Cameron Mukherjee Set To Become Youngest Battle Trophy Contestant At Crail Golf

Ultra-talented East Lothian teenager Cameron Mukherjee is set to become the youngest to tee up in this weekend’s (April 16th & 17th) prestigious Battle Trophy at Crail Golfing Society in Fife.

Mukherjee, a member at Gullane Golf Club, will tee up for the first time on the host Craighead Links course aged just 14-years, one month, 12 days.  That will also mean a 34-year age gap between himself and the oldest competitor in this year’s 72-player field.

Mukherjee, and the 2021 Under-14 Scottish Boys champion, is contesting the event on the invitation of Scottish Golf and will also have plenty of family competition this weekend with his 16-year-old twin brothers Samuel and Oliver also competing on the acclaimed Gil Hanse designed course at golf’s seventh oldest club.

“The boys were never interested in video games, a Nintendo or anything like that,” said dad Robin. “They’d rather be kicking a ball, throwing a ball, or hitting a ball with a stick.

“When they were younger, I’d take the twins down to the par-3 course at Craigielaw in their double buggy and let them chip and putt. I was very much of the mindset of letting them enjoy themselves and, as a result of them hitting a ball around when they were young, they just got the bug.

“All the credit goes to them as they have worked so hard at it. They just love playing golf.”

Credit also goes to the Stephen Gallacher Foundation, set up by DP World Tour star Stephen Gallacher, who has worked closely with the Mukherjee teenagers and continues to help nurture the hopeful careers of so many Scottish girls and boys.

And speaking of youngsters, it was three years ago when Connor Graham created Scottish Golf history by being the youngest to tee up in the Scottish Men’s Amateur and held over both courses at Crail Golfing Society. Connor was then aged 12-years, and the Crail Golfing Society and Blairgowrie member will also be making his Battle Trophy debut this weekend, and just a year older at 15 than Cameron Mukherjee.

The Battle Trophy was first played at Crail in 1999, and since 2001 the event had been an SGU counting event.

Past Battle Trophy winners include George Murray (2005, 2006), Grant Forrest (2006), Connor Syme (2017), and Joe Bryce (2019).

Of note, the Craighead Links course is proudly the first course designed outside of the US by now very renowned Gil Hanse.  Hanse also designed Castle Stuart, host venue for the Scottish Open from 2011 to 2013, and then again in 2016.  Hanse also designed the 2016 Rio Olympic Games host course.
