Each Time Wolff Hears An Ice-Cream Van He Makes Birdie At Rocket Mortgage Classic

Did you hear the story about the PGA Tour golfer who every time he heard the sounds of an ice-cream van he made a birdie?

Well, 21-year old Tour sensation Matthew Wolff must have heard the sounds of an ice-cream van on nine occasions as that is how many birdies he made on day three of the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.

Wolff, who won a first Tour title last year in just his fourth event, grabbed an eagle, nine birdies but also dropped three shots in a second straight eight-under par 64 to move to 19-under par and three shots clear of Bryson DeChambeau (67) and Ryan Armour (67) sharing second at 16-under par.

“It was a great round of golf out there today,” said Wolff who played the third round in the company of Ireland’s Seamus Power who posted a round of 69 to be sharing 4th place on 14-under par.

“I heard an ice cream truck circling the property and seemed like every time I heard that, I had made birdie or made a putt, so I’ve got to give a lot of credit to that. I think on the fifth hole I made that long one. more birdies, more ice cream, so that was my mindset from that point on and probably going to be the same one tomorrow.

“Felt like the putter was really good today. Wasn’t really thinking about much over the putt, lining it up, feeling confident in the line and stroking it really nice. I think my irons were the biggest improvement from last week, just being able to control the distances and being able to give myself a lot more looks.”

Just think how many ice creams Wolff could buy if he captured the $7.5m Detroit event. First prize is $1.314m and if a standard ice cream costs say $5 that would translate into 262,800 ice creams.

And Wolff was asked in a very last question of his post third round interview what is his favourite flavoured ice cream

“I’m just more like vanilla guy, but I don’t know, there’s a couple popsicles on those ice cream trucks that are pretty dang good,” he said smiling.

“I’m not really sure. I’ll be thinking about that tomorrow, though.”
