Rory McIlroy already has created Wells Fargo Championship history in winning two of the Charlotte events and he tees-up later this week looking to capture a third.
The event was first contested in 2003 as the Wachovia Championship and in 2009 and 2010 it was without a sponsor and known simply as the Quail Hollow Championship.
The 2010 championship remains very special to McIlroy as it was his first of now 15 PGA Tour successes and with the Ulsterman producing a blistering final day 62 to win by four shots from Phil Mickelson.
And now after a fortnight’s break from competition following his disappointing Masters showing, McIlroy has returned to Quail Hollow and he also won by an even more impressive seven shots in 2015.
The PGA Tour has released the grouping for this week’s 17th staging of the event.
McIlroy finds himself grouped with Tony Finau and Sergio Garcia and leaving fans disappointed with his Augusta National he did capture the Players Championship.
Finau is in good form having finished T5 at the Masters Tournament, his fourth top-10 in his last five major starts.
Garcia returns to the Wells Fargo Championship for the first time since 2013; has four top-10s in eight starts this season, including a runner-up with partner Tommy Fleetwood at last week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Mickelson finds himself grouped with defending champ, Jason Day and former Australian PGA winner, Harold Varner III.
Unlike McIlroy and Day, Mickelson returns to Quail Hollow for a 16th Wells Fargo with eight top-five but still looking for first title.
In fact, the Wells Fargo Championship is one of seven PGA TOUR events Mickelson has played 15-plus times without a victory.
