McIlroy Ends Dell Technologies Pro-Am Singing ‘Fields of Athenry’ .. See Video.

Norton, Massachusetts ….

The last place Rory McIlroy expected to be singing one of Ireland’s famed folk ballads was on the putting green ahead of his defence of a major PGA Tour event.

That’s what happened late on the eve of the Dell Technologies Championship outside of Boston.

McIlroy was contesting the Pro-Am with three amateur partners, including the father to PGA Tour Commissioner, Jay Monahan who was born just north of Boston.

Then after McIlroy had putted-out on the par three, eighth hole and the 17th of his round, the caddy to another amateur in the group grabbed McIlroy and his player, before all three put their arms around each other to sing the Fields of Athenry.

Well, at least McIlroy tried to join in even though it appears he did not know the words as you can gather in the video actually shot by McIlroy’s manager.

Caddy Nolan Donatl, who lives to the south of TPC Boston, said he knows just two Irish ballads and other being ‘Danny Boy’.

Donatl certainly sang the ballad with gusto and while McIlroy did not all the words he clearly enjoyed this unique break in competition.

“That was really cool”, he said.

“I was very impressed with Nolan and he clearly has a talent plus he looked to be a pretty good caddy”.

The rendition also impressed the PGA Tour Commissioner who walked with the group for all but the last hole and Monahan could be observed often engaged in conversation with McIlroy and his manager.

And the PGA Tour has updated the ‘Career Money Leaders’ list ahead of this week’s event in outer Boston.

McIlroy is lying 17th with winnings of $US 36,504,840 to be the second leading European and some $US 10m behind Masters winner Sergio Garcia.

Tiger Woods continues to top the list banking $US 110,061,012 in prize-money.

Padraig Harrington is 43rd with earnings of $US 24,683,420 while Graeme McDowell is places 101st with winnings of $US 15,355,494.

And while McIlroy is presently ranked No. 4 in the world he is No. 3 on the Tour’s ‘Scoring Average’ and averaging 69.093 for his 45 PGA Tour rounds this season but just .229 of a stroke to the No. 1 ranked Jordan Spieth.
