McIlroy Turns To A ‘Mallet’ & Now D J Turns To A Short-Neck ‘Spider’ Putter.

Much has been written about Rory McIlroy changing to a Scotty Cameron ‘Mallet’ putter and now reigning U.S. Open champ, Dustin Johnson revealed he’s switched to TaylorMade ‘Spider’ putter.

Johnson confirmed the switch after posting a five under par 67 on the opening day of the storm-affected BMW Championship to be just two shots behind compatriot Roberto Castro.

However many in the field, including the star trio of Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott, still have eight holes to play.

short-neck-spiderJohnson’s only real blemish was at the last when he found the water with his drive but as for his putting he was pleased with his switch to a ‘Spider’ putter.

“I messed around with the Spider before and I just felt like last week and the past few weeks I’ve been struggling to get the putter on line, like the line that I was seeing,” he said.

“And so I was sent one of the Spider putters and I started rolling it and it felt pretty good.  So I putted with it like the last four holes in the Pro-Am yesterday, because I didn’t get it until like late in the round, because it was shipped in.

“It’s one of the short neck Spiders.

“I then practiced with it this morning and it was really good, so I kept it going and it rolled really nicely today.  I know it works, so if I miss putts, it’s not the putter, it’s me.”

Johnson believes it’s some six years since he last used a Spider putter and that was at the Waste Management Open in Phoenix.
