Rickie Fowler Hoping First Wyndham Championship Can Lead To Third USA Ryder Cup Cap.

Greensboro, North Carolina … Rickie Fowler is hoping a first visit to the Wyndham Championship can lead to a third USA Ryder Cup cap.

Fowler is currently lying 12th on the US Team qualifying points table and four spots out of automatically qualifying for Davis Love 111s side.

The $US 5.6m Wyndham Championship is the second last qualifying event for the U.S. team ahead of the final event being next week’s Barclays Championship.

Fowler made his Ryder Cup debut in 2010 at Celtic Manor managing two half points from three matches.

He missed selection in 2012 but returned to the USA team for Gleneagles managing three half points from five matches.

But after an indifferent 2015/16 PGA Tour season, where Fowler has recorded a best finish of T2nd in February’s Waste Management Phoenix Open.

And now with just two events remaining for qualifying onto the USA Team, Fowler has at least shown Team Captain, Davis Love 111 he is serious about wanting to make his Hazeltine side.

“Whether playing here at the Wyndham sends Davis a message or not, I want to do my best that I can to make that team on points,” said Fowler.

“I know I’m a little ways out. Some good golf can take care of that.

“Like I said, it’s a fine line from playing some very good golf right now. Yeah, I want to show that I am committed to the Ryder Cup and I want to be a part of that team but I got take care of my business and make more birdies and less bogeys.”

And while much was made last week at the Rio Olympics of Fowler indicating he would tee-up this week in Greensboro, the current World No. 8 indicated he has committed to the even long before travelling to Brazil.

“The decision to come play here at Wyndham was made quite awhile before the Olympics and it was just more of the timing that we wanted to do it while we were down there and coming up closer though week,” said Fowler.

“But with where I was on Ryder Cup points and knowing that the points, with Bethpage coming up, this was a good addition to the schedule. It wasn’t something we planned on earlier in the year but the Ryder Cup is something that means a lot to me.

“It’s something where I’ve been a part of two teams and I don’t want to miss out on another one.”
