Ian Woosnam Calls It Quits After 28 Masters Appearances.

Former Masters Champion Ian Woosnam has called it quits after 28 Augusta National appearances.

Woosnam, 58 confirmed he has played his last Masters after rounds of 82 and 81 for a 19-over par 163 tally.

The wee Welshman, who captured the 1991 Masters and had the famed green jacket fitted on him by Nick Faldo, continues to struggle with back complaint as reflected in his scores.

And when asked by www.golfbytourmiss.com if his scores spoiled his enthusiasm Woosnam confirmed:  “No, that was my last go. I am just not fit enough due to my extremely bad back to walk this course as it just seizes me up. I have been in pain all the way around.”

The highlight of Ian Woosnam's playing career and being fitted with the Masters green jacket in 1991.

The highlight of Ian Woosnam’s playing career and being fitted with the Masters green jacket in 1991.

Woosnam made his Masters debut in 1988 but was not around to see the good friend and Scot Sandy Lyle be fitted with the green jacket having missed the cut.

Three years later he became the fifth different European to win the Masters posting an 11-under par victory tally.

However in recent years Woosnam has struggled to remain competitive missing the cut in every Masters since 2001 with the exception of his T44th finish in 2008.

And it got no easier this year for the 29-times European Tour winning golfer.

“There’s not much they can do,” he said.

“I have ankylosing spondylitis and I can’t play with all the slopes here.  I was swinging it beautiful before I came here. I am always taking pain killers just to play golf but it’s just too tough here for me.

“I did say at the start of the week if I shot in the 80s I would call it a day. It’s just too much for me and I am in just going around in pain all the way round and you can’t expect to play well.

“It’s time for me to sit back and watch and watch everyone else play. I’ll still keep coming but the pain just gets to your legs and in my back.

It’s a shame really as I did not want to finish off playing like that but you can only do your best.

“But never mind, I’ve still got a Green Jacket.”

And Woosnam immediately ruled out any thoughts of taken part in the Masters opening ceremony.

“No, I don’t think so and I don’t want to go down that path just yet,” he said.
