David Drysdale will learn tomorrow (Monday) if his season will continue or if he’ll be on the sidelined for the the remainder of the year.

The Borders golfing ace is set to undergo an MRI in Edinburgh on his injured right leg.

Drysdale sustained the injury at the very first hole in Saturday’s Italian Open third round at Monza.

He had played a bunker shot and was climbing out of the bunker when he felt his calf muscle ‘pop’.

“The pain was so bad it felt like I had been shot in the leg,” said Drysdale.

“I was in total agony and could hardly walk, and there was no way I could continue the round.”

Tour physio staff believe Drysdale may have a torn calf  muscle but it that will not be confirmed until the results of the MRI is known.

It could not have come at a worst time for the 40-year old Scot who teed-up in Monza lying 114th on the Race to Dubai and four places outside of retaining full 2016 Tour membership.

However at the end of the event and with the Race to Dubai rankings adjusted Drysdale had dropped four spots to 118th.

“Not knowing the extent of the injury means I also don’t know how long it may take to heal,” he added.

“But I do know it’s not what I needed right now”.

Drysdale had been five under par at the time having made the cut also in past five stroke-play events and needing a top-nine Italian finish to get inside the top-110 on the money list.

Depending of course of the nature of his injury he still has five events to play to retain his card while if out for the rest of the year, Dysdale could be entitled to a medial exemption for part of 2016.

Germany’s Martin Kaymer (67) let slip a first victory this year losing a second hole play-off to Sweden’s Rikard Karlberg (70) after both players ended play tied at 19-under par.
