New PGA Champion Jason Day Hints Taking Wanamaker Trophy Back To Ipswich Golf Club.

New PGA Champion Jason Day has hinted he make consider taking the gleaming Rodman Wanamaker Trophy home with him and a possbile visit to the Ipswich Golf Club in Queensland.

The club holds a special place in the heart of Australia’s newest Major Champion following his stunning three shot triumph along the shores of Lake Michigan.

The 27-year old Day became Australia’s 11th Major winner and on the 20th anniversary of Steve Elkington being the last Australian-born winner when he defeated Colin Montgomerie in a play-off in 1995 at Riviera in suburban L.A.

Day spoke of his special relationship with the Ipswich club as it was the first time his long-time coach and also caddy, Col Swanton caddied for him and that was during a Queensland Open.

“It was the first time Col ever caddied for me at the Ipswich, and we had a pull cart, like a little trolley,” recalled Day.

“He couldn’t make it up the 18th fairway he was that buggered that he couldn’t make it up. So now he can carry 45 pound golf bags four rounds around a place like here at Whistling  Straits.

“So he’s come a long day since we were first together on a golf course at Ipswich,”

And when asked after his formal champion’s press conference had ended if he would consider taking the PGA trophy to Ipswich Day smiled:  “Oh, the enormity of this victory is still sinking it. I am not sure but then it sounds a good idea.”

Of course, with Day’s wife Elly expecting the couple’s second child in December it means Day missing the Australian Open in Sydney and the likelihood of another pairing with superstar American Jordan Spieth.
