For some bizarre reason only known to Golf Digest magazine but World No. 1 Rory McIlroy is pictured as Michelangelo’s David on the cover their April 2015 ‘Masters Preview’ edition.

The story of David and Goliath is about David finding a hole in Goliath’s armor by firing a slingshot into the giant’s forehead bringing him crashing to the ground. David then takes Goliath’s sword, kills him and then cuts off his head. When the Philistine’s see their hero dead, they turned an ran.

In the mock topless photo of McIlroy he has a golf bag with what looks like just 11 clubs slung over his shoulder while his ‘vitals’ are covered by wearing the Irish national tartan kilt and sporran and all kept in place with a Nike belt.

McIlroy’s also carrying a golf ball in his right hand but I’m not sure what items he has in a pouch on his left hip.

And McIlroy’s also sporting an Omega wristwatch showing the time as 10.09am that hopefully will not be his 2015 final round Augusta National starting tee time given the leader usually doesn’t tee off to around 3pm.

The magazine heralds the story with the line – ‘RORY – The New Model For Greatness’.

But if there is a Goliath teeing up at the Masters then surely it’s McIlroy.  He’s the giant of the game at present having won the final two Majors of 2014 along with a first WGC, and looking now to become only the sixth player in the history of the game to win the Grand Slam.

If you’re looking for a Masters David competing at Augusta National next month then it has to be the rest of the Masters field who’ll each be out to cut McIlroy down to size.
