BBC Sports Awards A Farce As Rory McIlroy Denied Top Award & European Team Miss Out.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards are a complete farce after World No. 1 Rory McIlroy was denied the top award in favour of F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton.

In a season when McIlroy dominated ‘British’ sport in capturing two Majors, a first WGC title and the European Tour’s flagship event it was Hamilton who was honoured on Sunday night in Glasgow.

The BBC needs to take a serious look at the awards and the judging process because there’s something drastically wrong when a sportsperson of McIlroy’s calibre is denied the award by a massive 86,175  votes.

Twitter comments suggest McIlroy’s decision to represent Ireland at the 2016 Olympics was at the heart of the matter but the ‘Beeb’ needs to remove the voting process out of a biased pubic and set up a more in tune voting panel.

And naturally the 29-year old Hamilton was delighted in polling 209,920 votes compared to McIlroy’s 123,745 votes.

What a farce as Lewis Hamilton is voted 2014 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

What a farce as Lewis Hamilton is voted 2014 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

“I am so speechless. I’m so proud and honoured to be among such great sporting talent,” said Hamilton, who earned 34% of the vote.

And this is after Hamilton virtually waved a chequered flag in McIlroy winning the major award on the eve of the awards presentation.

The venue, which hosted netball, boxing and gymnastics during the Commonwealth Games last summer, was chosen in the year that Scotland hosted the Commonwealth Games and golf’s Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.

However the only bright note for golf was Paul McGinley being honoured as ‘Coach of the Year’.

“I’m very, very honoured,” said McGinley.  “I need to thank the people of Scotland. Your support was huge. I had 12 great players, 12 great personalities and a great backroom team and vice captains,” the four-time winner of the Ryder Cup added.

“My plan as coach was to allow the vice-captains to follow each game. I had a plan and was getting the information fed in and was plotting the next move.

“We never had one hand on the cup. A lot of thought went in to the order. I did not think of myself as a cheerleader. I was managing the situation as best as possible.”

But in yet in another glaring awards injustice the victorious European Ryder Cup team was denied the ‘Team of the Year’ prize by ….. wait for it …..the England women rugby team who beat Canada 21-9 in Paris to claim the World Cup for a first time since 1994.

Give me strength!  Give me strength!
