Golf Legends Goalby & Finsterwald Add To 75th Anniversary Wyndham C’ship Celebration.

Golfing legends Bob Goalby and Dow Finsterwald added to the celebration of this year’s 75th anniversary Wyndham Championship.

Goalby, 85 is well known in virtually being handed victory in the 1968 Masters after Argentina’s Robert De Vincenzo signed for a four at the 17rh when he in fact he had holed out for a birdie ‘3’.

However the first of Goalby’s 11 PGA Tour wins came at the 1958 Greater Greensboro Open and the championship was then known.

Finsterwald followed Goalby into the Greater Greensboro Open winner’s circle a year later in 1959 and one also of 11 PGA Tour wins.

However the now 84 year is well known in having captured the 1968 PGA Championship and after losing the final a year earlier and on the last occasion the championship was a match-play format event.

The legendary pair entertained the media with their many stories from the past and with both agreeing Tiger Woods made the right decision in advising Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson he was unfit to travel to Gleneagles, if chosen as a ‘wildcard’ pick.

“It would have been a tough thing to go over to Scotland, a 12-man team, with one guy who isn’t sure that he can go five rounds in three days of play,” said Fisterwald.

“So I don’t think Watson could take guys over there who weren’t well and healthy at the time of selection, so Tiger has actually helped Tom so he didn’t have to make a decision.”

Finsterwald should know what he is talking about given he played in four USA Ryder Cup sides while he was appointed USA captain in 1977 and leading his team to a five shot success at Royal Lytham and St. Annes.
