Phil Mickelson Hoping To Make It 24th Time Lucky To Seal Grand Slam Success.

Phil Mickelson tees up in his 24th U.S. Open hoping to finally capture the one Major to allude him and become only the sixth player in the history of the game to capture golf’s Grand Slam.

Ans since making his debut as an amateur in 1990 at Medinah Mickelson has finished runner-up six times.

But then the five-time Major winner has fond memories of the 1999 event at Pinehurst, where he finished second to Payne Stewart who died less than five months later.

“It would really mean a lot to me and then to do it right here where Payne and I had this moment where we talked about fatherhood but he also talked about winning future US Opens and although I haven’t won one yet I’m still fighting hard,” said Mickelson.

Mickelson, who was runner-up last at Merion to Justin Rose, indicated it would so much to him to win at Pinehurst No. 2.

“I feel like the five players that have done that have separated themselves from the other players throughout all time,” he said.

“It shows that they have a complete game.”

And despite being so close so often in the U.S. Open Mickelson remains ever positive ahead of the year’s second Major.

“The biggest thing for me is that I look at those close calls as a positive sign for having given myself so many opportunities in our national championship and I believe that I’ll have more opportunities,” he said.

“When I do, hopefully the experience that I’ve had in the past will allow me to handle it better in the future.

“It’s just amazing how much time has gone by to hear that this is my 24th U.S. Open? I don’t feel that old. I guess I look it, but I don’t feel it.

“Pinehurst here has so many great memories for me, even though it’s not a place that I have won a national championship, I’m certainly trying to change that this week.”
