Arnold Palmer’s Favourite Toughest 18 Holes – Revealed In A 1966 Qantas Ad.

Arnold Palmer’s favourite ’round the world’ 18 and toughest holes of all time has been revealed in of all places –  a 1966 Qantas Airlines advertisement.

The Qantas advertisement appears among 11 long-forgotten airline, private plane and a helicopter ‘The King’ promoted, and appearing in the Spring 2014 edition of Kingdom magazine.

The ads appear in a special section of the near 200-page magazine under the chapter – Life in Adverts – and highlighting Palmer’s relationship with aviation.

And four of Palmer’s favourite holes are found in Australia – the 3rd hole at The Lakes, the 9th hole at Victoria Golf Club, 12th hole at Kooyonga in Adelaide and Royal Melbourne’s par three, 16th.

The advertisement says Palmer picked the 18 tough holes, one from each of his favourite courses around the world.  He then ran a contest asking readers to work out which holes he selected for the prize of a two-week to Australia flying Qantas.

There was mention in the ad of a Good Losers’ Tour where the losers could pack their clubs and phone your travel agent to leave on a flight in October to see Arnie take on the contest winner and their pros at the Australian Open at Royal Queensland and then the Dunlop International at the Australian Club in Sydney.

Incidentally, Palmer traveled to Brisbane to win that 1966 Australian Open for the only time in his career.

“Your clubs will get a great workout during 10 golf-filled days Down Under.  And you’ll have a ball with the vigorous outgoing Australians”, the advertisement ended in declaring.

Ahhh – Those were the good ole days of flying with Qantas who now slug you an arm and a leg to take your golf clubs anywhere.
