McGinley To Announce Gleneagles Vice-Captains Next Thursday – Torrance Certainty.

European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley is set to make an announcement next Thursday in Dublin on this Gleneagles vice-captains.

The announcement is seemingly of such importance it will take place at 11.30am in the office of the Ireland Taoiseach (President) in Upper Merrion St, Dublin.

Dublin may sound strange for the announcement but McGinley is due to attend the Irish Golf Writers annual dinner the same day at Portmarnock and, given the huge interest over there in anything to do with him at the  moment, it was decided to tie the two events together.

Smart voting is on Scotland’s Sam Torrance, and 2002 victorious European Captain, to be named as one of McGinley’s vice-captains.

Torrance had been appointed by McGinley last October to captain the GB & I Seve Trophy side whereas McGinley has long spoke of the encouragement and inspiration he gleaned from Torrance when he first contested the 2002 Ryder Cup at The Belfry, and where McGinley holed the winning putt.

The bigger bet is who will McGinley choose as his second vice-captain, if at all he announces a second vice-captain in Dublin?

Unless 2012 winning captain Jose Maria Olazabal has changed his mind then McGinley could go with Miguel Angel Jimenez who later next month will lead Europe in the inaugural Eurasia Cup in Malaysia.   He may also shock in naming fellow Irishman Des Smyth who was a vice-captain under Ian Woosnam in the 2006 K Club Ryder Cup.

Earlier this month rival USA Team captain Tom Watson added Raymond Floyd to join Andy North his back room team, and with average age of the old age trio a remarkable 67 years.
