Chris Wood – From ‘No Man’s Land To Promised Land’.

England’s Chris Wood returns to the scene of his first European Tour success admitting he’s in ‘No Man’s Land’.

Wood claimed a maiden European Tour victory in stunning style at Doha Golf Club 12 months ago, closing with an eagle three to see off South African George Coetzee and Spaniard Sergio Garcia by a single stroke.

The Bristol-born golfer won in sensational manner sending a booming drive down the last and then playing  a 6-iron from 200 yards and a holing a 12-foot eagle putt

“I don’t think I’ll hit three better shots than that, under the circumstances,” he said.

“For me to beat that would be to hit three shots like that to win an Open Championship.

“There’s a lot more pressure on winning your first event on The European Tour than winning your second or third, so I was obviously very proud of how I handled that pressure.”

However while Wood would dearly love to be handed the gleaming ‘Mother of Pearl’ trophy for a second year running he is also conscious of moving forward in his career.

Wood is currently ranked 76th in the world and a dozen spots outside of qualifying for first WGC of 2014 – Accenture Match-Play Championship.

“I am in No Man’s land lying in the 70s on the World Rankings and it really doesn’t make any difference to you, whereas someone 20 places higher than me on the rankings, which isn’t a lot is getting into absolutely everything,” he said.

“So yeah, I’m looking to get myself into the those events like the Match Play but more worried about the long term stuff.

“That’s what I am working towards.  I’m not worried if I get into the Match Play in a couple of weeks time or whatever.  As long as I feel like I’m on the right track and that I will be there for years to come and not just the odd one-off event.”
