Monty To Now Make His Seniors Debut at Fox Chapel, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania

Coln Montgomerie has brought forward his Seniors Tour debut to late next month when he will tee-up in the Senior Players Championship staring on June 23th at the Fox Chapel GC in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.

Monty had intended to make his over-50 debut in July’s Senior British Open at Royal Birkdale.

“Between now and then I have only the one tournament, the BMW International in Germany, which is the week before,” said Montgomerie ahead of teeing up in today’s commencing BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

“I plan to play say 30 tournaments next year, which is more than I do now. What I’m going to do is play five here in Europe, five in the European Seniors Tour and 20 on the Champions Tour in America.”

Montgomerie is exempt into the Champions Tour after being inducted earlier this month into the Golfing Hall of Fame.

Montgomerie and his wife, Gaynor have already been looking around for a US base but unlike many of the European-born PGA Tour players, the Scot is keen not to move to Florida.

“Everyone seems to live in Florida!  I prefer Atlanta or the Carolinas, or maybe go back home to Dallas or Houston or even California, that kind of thing,” he said.

“So as long as it’s southern.”

And Monty tees up in his 25th straight BMW PGA since making his debut in 1989 having just competed in the Mili-Melia,  drive of over 1,000 miles from Berlin to Rome in a 1937 BMW

“The BMW has come a long way in 80 years but it was a fantastic little car and we got into it through meeting different people and some real petrol heads,” he said.

“I had three days off. I thought it would be a good idea, but I’m paying the penalty now because it was very small.  It wasn’t very good for the back.  But I have had physio, so we’re okay now.

“But it was superb.  I really enjoyed it.  We went through San Marino and into Rome.  It was something different, for me a change as opposed to doing something for others all the time.”
