Geoff Ogilvy’s Augusta National Hopes Disappear Into A Watery Redstone Grave.

Geoff Ogilvy’s hope of contesting next month’s Masters ended at the par three, seveth hole of the Redstone course on day two of the Shell Houston Open.

Ogilvy arrived in Houston lying 50th on the World Rankings and just really needing to make the cut in the $6.2m event.

The Australian went into the second round at one over par but then started with an opening hole bogey before his demise at the seventh hole on the Redstone Course.

Ogilvy put his tee shot into the water left of the green and after taking a compulsory drop his third shot landed short on the slope and rolled back into the water.

He then took another penalty and chipped onto the green and some 16-feet from the flag from where he two putter for a quadruple bogey ‘7’ that sent the 2006 US Open champion to six over par for the tournament.

But to his credit, Ogilvy put aside the mishap to birdie his eighth and ninth holes.

However the writing was still on the wall when he double bogeyed the 13th, where he had to take a penalty drop after a poor second shot landed well into a hazard, and then dropped further shots at 15 and the last in a round of 79 for a shock eight over par tally.

It was easily Ogilvy’s worst score by three shots in 28 rounds of the suburban Humble course.

This week marks the second last cut-off point in qualifying for the 11th April commencing Masters.  The winner of this week’s Shell Houston Open, if not already exempt, will earn an Augusta invitation.   Also, those in the top-50 in the ranking, and also not already qualifyied, will also get to drive down Magnolia Lane.

Ogilvy has played in every Masters since making his debut in 2006.

His best finish was just two years ago when he finishing fourth behind South African Charl Schwartzel and with Aussies Adam Scott and Jason Day sharing second place.

Ogilvy had been asked about his Augusta aspirations during the recent Tampa Bay Championship.

Here is his remarks.

“Yes, Augusta has been on my mind really all year because I didn’t start the year exempt in the Masters for the first time for a while,” he said.

“So it’s kind of been on my mind a little bit.  It was on my mind a little bit more at the end of the West Coast as I was plummeting in the World Rankings rather fast, so nice to get back on the right side of the Top‑50 last week.  But I guess any of the next few weeks I could really lock it up with one good week again.

“So it’s nice, I’m in much better position.  This is probably the most points I’ll play for between now and the Masters this week, because everyone’s here.

“It would be really nice‑‑ it would be obviously great to win the golf tournament but a consolation prize would be to have a strong finish and lock up the Masters, that would be pretty good.  So I’m thinking about it, and I’ll use it as a motivation rather than anything else.”

And Ogilvy did also indicate that if he didn’t qualify for the Masters he surely would not watch coverage of the season’s first Major on TV.
