Peter Hanson Sours Ryder Cup Success Declaring Olazabal Is Off His Christmas Card List.

Peter Hanson has soured Europe’s Ryder Cup success and declaring: ‘There will be not many Christmas cards for Jose Maria Olazabal.’

Hanson qualified automatically for a second straight European Team and then two weeks later burst into winning form in capturing the KLM Open.

However any thoughts Hanson had of impressing the European Team captain were snuffed out when the Orlando-based Hanson played just one match before the Sunday Singles.

Hanson had teamed with Scotland’s Paul Lawrie in the opening Fourballs but were soundly beaten 5 & 4 by Americans Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson.

He then joined Germany’s Martin Kaymer as the only Europeans not to compete on day two ahead of Hanson losing his Singles match 2 down to Jason Dufner, and Hanson was the only European Team member to score zero points.

Hanson was so bitter at being left out he sought solace for some two hours in a darkened corner of the Medinah Locker Room.

“You’re part of a team and when I got notified 20 minutes before we teed off on Saturday morning, I was very upset,” said Hanson.

“I didn’t take it very well.  So I just locked myself in a dark room and stayed there for a couple of hours, because you don’t want to let your bad feelings affect the other guys.

“It’s all about getting out there and supporting your teammates, so there I was out there all Saturday afternoon walking down the fairway, and that didn’t damage the team which is the main thing.”

Hanson admitted he had laid down on benches on the Locker Room. I had been on the range in the morning warming up and I was already in game mode. I just wanted to get out there and win some points.

“Of course, you can’t let you own ego affect the rest of the team.

“I haven’t spoken to Ollie about it since as we didn’t have time and I didn’t want to bring it up when we were celebrating.

“But I now might now send him many Christmas cards but that’s just the way it is.

“It’s tough for the captain to be in that position too. There is a lot of pressure and there’s no way to know if you are making the right or wrong move when you come to a decision – but the as long as you win as a team, that’s all that counts.”

Hanson was commenting after carding a level par 72 at Carnoustie on day one of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

And Hanson is wearing his European Ryder Cup team shoes hoping the footwear will help turnaround his fortunes in the $US 5m Scottish event.

“I like the shoes and I thought I would wear them for a couple of weeks as they are also in the Swedish colours and hopefully they will bring me some luck,” he said.
