Rafa Cabrera- Bello Looking To Duplicate Molinari’s Soaring Gleneagles Success.

Spain’s Rafa Cabrera-Bello knows the only way he can force his way into the Ryder Cup team is to repeat the effort two years ago of Itlay’s Edoardo Molinari and capture this week’s Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

Cabrera-Bello is currently lying 14th on the European qualifying points table and even he were to duplicate Molinari’s 2010 success the Spaniard still would not qualify automatically.

However the 28-year old Cabrera-Bello, and reigning Dubai Desert Classic champion, can make the Ryder Cup team if to be afforded a Jose Maria Olazabal ‘wildcard’ pick.

Molinari did that at Gleneagles in 2010 forcing European captain, Colin Montgomerie’s hand in winning the event and then being afforded a Celtic Manor ‘wildcard’.

“I have always wanted toplay on a Ryder Cup team as long ago Seve (Ballesteros) and Jose Maria(Olazabal) were my heroes,” said Cabrera-Bello.

“But I never thought at the start of the year I would be in this situation and I am just happy in this situation.

“Of course, I would prefer to be already in the side and going to Medinah but that’s for me to decide and all I can do is play my best and just wait.

“We saw was Edoardo did here two years ago so it is possible to get picked by winning the last event of qualifying.

“So if I finish well here at Gleneagles it will give Jose Maria something to think about and that is all I can do.”

Should Cabrera-Bello be afforded a ‘wildcard’ pick he would seem the ideal partner to fellow Spaniard Sergio Garcia.

Garcia cemented his place in the European Team courtesy of his victory in Monday’s conclusion to the rain-affected Wyndham Championship.

“I get on very well with Sergio and it was great to see him win again and secure his place in the team,”said Cabrera-Bello.

“But all I can do is play my best this week and see what happens.

“I have not spoken to Ollie and first of all I would not put him in that situation and secondly it is not for me to intrude in those decisions.

“I am not thinking about getting a pick, no one bit.  All I am concentrating on in to play well this week and hopefully give myself a chance of winning the tournament.

“I am sure if I perform really, really good here it is going to increase my chances of getting picked and that is all I can do, and that’s all I care about.”

Just three of those currently inside the automatic 10 qualifiers are contesting this week’s £1.4m Gleneagles event.

They include Scotland’s Paul Lawrie (fourth on the points table), Italy’s Francesco Molinari (fifth) and Sweden’s Peter Hanson (seventh)

Olazabal will announce his two ‘wildcard’ picks at 12 noon (UK time) Monday 27th August.
