“I’m Going To Spend Future Birthday’s In The Bahamas”, Says Monty

Colin Montgomerie celebrated his 48thbirthday getting drenched not in champagne but rain in carding a 70 on the first day of the BMW International Open in Munich.

Monty had moved to two under par after 13 holes when his drive found a fairway bunker at the par four, 14th.

However Monty was then involved in a discussion with officials about the state of the course as the bunker was already filling fast with rain water.

It meant Monty having to take his stance in water before he was allowed a free drop within a dryer part of the bunker.

Monty looked far from pleased when his ‘drop’ plugged in the wet sand on route to a bogey and a round of a two under par 70.

However the victorious Ryder Cup captain emerged from the scorer’s hut pleased to talk of his new birthday travel plans.

“I’m getting to that stage from now on I should be spending my birthday on a beach in the Bahamas and not having to be drenched out here,”he joked.

“It’s nothing to do with Germany as it’s a great place but it was just horrific out there.”

BMW’s Marco Kaussler then presented Monty with a ‘Lederhosen’ and joked with the 1999 event winner he had to wear the leather shorts to Friday night’s Bavarian theme ‘Players Party’.

“I think they might be a bit big for me,” said Monty holding up the attire.

Monty handed back the shorts and in return was handed a Jereboam of Pol Roger champers to toast his big day.

Sweden’s Henrik Stenson posted an eight-under par 64 to lead by one under a ‘preferred lie’ rule on the Nord Eichenried course.

England’s Gary Boyd is second with four players, including Scotland’s Paul Lawrie sharing third place on six under par.
