Paul Casey set about ending a two-year winless drought on day one of the Irish Open and declaring he believes he can join long-time friend, Justin Rose as a Major Champion.

The winner of the 2013 Open Championship will receive a first prize cheque of £945,000 ($US 1.433m) that will be up £45,000 on ($US 68,733) the cheque handed last year to Ernie Els at Royal Lytham and St. Annes.
