Strange as it seems but Germany’s Martin Kaymer revealed his hole-in-one at the par three, seventh hole on day two of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic is his first-ever in golf.
The World No. 4 was delighted to see his ball find the bottom of the cup after hitting an 8-iron at the 177-yard hole he was playing as his 16th.
Kaymer earned himself a wrist watch from sponsors, Omega but later revealed his trainer, Rolf Kloettschen, will get to keep in a bet he’s had with the 2010 U.S. PGA Champion.
“The sad about getting a hole-in-one is that my trainer and I have this bet so that he gives me 10 Euros every time I play that hole if I don’t get a hole-in-one,” said Kaymer.
“But if I make a hole-in-one then he gets the prize, so he gets to keep the wrist watch so that’s why he seemed more happy than me.”
And that probably is ideal situation as Kaymer is sponsored by Rolex.
Kaymer has been playing golf since he was 15 and it was the first occasion he has enjoyed the feeling of an ace.
“I’ve never had one in my life, and you would think with all the rounds of golf we play as professionals I would have had at least one hole-in-one before today,” he said.
“I have been playing golf since I was 15 years of age but my caddy, Christian (Donald – brother of Luke) said it might happen this year and it has.
“It was a good yardage for an 8-iron but I thought it might come up short so it was nice to see it go in.”
It is the second hole-in-one this week after Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher was presented with the keys to a new Mercedes Benz S sedan for an ace at the 15th hole on Thursday.
Kaymer’s ace also is the 24th hole-in-one in the 23-year history of the Dubai tournament.
