Injury plagued French golfer Thomas Levet will be sidelined for at least a month after breaking his ribs following a freak accident during last week’s Volvo Champions event in South Africa.
Levet slipped while walking down a staircase from the Fancourt 11th tee during the third round of the event recording an 82 ahead of a final round 76 to finish well down the field with a 20-over par tally.
It was not to Tuesday and on arrival in the UAE when Levet underwent an x-ray at an Abu Dhabi hospital that the reigning French Open champion was informed of the extent of his injury.
“Flip, flop, splash, plouch in the bush … fell on stairs on 11th hole last week,” said Levet on Twitter.
“Will have to miss 3 to 6 weeks … holidays are on the way,
“I couldn’t carry more than 160m off the tee and +3 on Sunday in those conditions was a miracle.”
Levet, who had his chest heavily strapped, advised European Tour officials of his injury and with his place in the $US 2.5m event being taken by England’s Sam Little.
It is the second time in just nine months Levet will be sidelined with injury.
Last June, Levet discovered he had broken his leg after a French Open victory jump into water guarding the 18th green at the National Club course in Versailles.
The injury cost Levet a place in the Open Championship and PGA Championship and saw him sidelined for seven weeks and did not return to the KLM Open in Holland.
