Ultra-talented Scot Conor Syme is now just one round from securing full 2018 European Tour membership after moving into a share of third place thanks to a 67 ahead of the final round of the European Tour’s Qualifying School in Spain.
The 22-year old Drumoig golfer is assured a full 2018 European Tour card in finishing top-25 at the School but Syme will now be looking to secure the leading graduate honours.
Syme heads to round six trailing just four strokes behind England’s Sam Horsfield who added a fifth round 67 to lead by three shots at 19-under par on the Lumine Golf Club course at Tarragona.
“It has been a great last three rounds and while I didn’t quite play as well as I had over the last couple of days but that is what you have to expect at a six-round event,” said Syme.
“It was the first time that I have had a scorecard in my hands for five days in a row but I am delighted with the position I am in and hopefully I can continue playing well tomorrow.
“It is so difficult as there are so many good players this week and all you can control is yourself. I played really well at Second Stage last week so I felt confident coming into it.
“It is not in my hands though and I can’t control how anyone plays tomorrow. I need to keep doing what I am doing and that will be hopefully be enough tomorrow.
“It is going to be a very different experience tomorrow. This year I have had a lot of good experiences, playing in The Open and making a few appearances on the European Tour, but I think tomorrow is going to be a very different experience.
“If you get too much into a situation where you are overthinking everything then that can affect your game, so you just need to keep a clear head as that is when you play your best golf.”
Robert MacIntyre brilliantly eagled the last in a score of 66 to be sharing 17th place on 11-under par but desperately needing a repeat six-under in the sixth round as his among nine players at 11-under who currently make-up the top-25.
The Glencruiiten lefty calmed drained a 15-footer on the 18th after four earlier birdies but also a bogey at 16 for a second day running.
Dave Law is two shots further back on nine-under par after a round of 69 while Scott Henry with a 68 to move to five-under par shares 58th place.
