Rory McIlroy Pulls The Plug On Marrying Caroline Wozniacki.

Rory McIlroy has confirmed he’s pulled the plug of marrying Danish-born tennis ace Caroline Wozniacki.

The double Major winner released a short statement indicating he felt he was not ready to be married.

“The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails” Mr McIlRoy said in a statement issued today.

“The problem is mine,” he said.

The former World No. 1 added:  “There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people.

“I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting,” his statement concluded.

The announcement comes as a shock given McIlroy had spoken last fortnight at his delight in meeting up with Wozniacki in London after competing in the Players Championship.   Wozniacki had been due to compete in an event in Rome but withdrew.  The pair then attended a London play ‘Bodyguard’ on May 13th and the Tuesday after McIlroy arrived in London from participating in the Players Championship.

As well, Wozniacki had spoken just recently about her joy in becoming a ‘young’ mother.

McIlroy had proposed to Wozniacki on New Year’s Eve while on a Sydney Harbour cruise, and after first seeking her parents permission.

The pair first met on July 2nd, 2011 at the David Hayes-Wladimir Klitschko World Heavyweight boxing match in Hamburg.  McIlroy was sitting right behind Wozniacki at the bout, and the two started chatting and struck a friendship.

Wozniacki was so taken back she began telling her friends:   “I’ve met Rory McIlroy, I’ve met Rory McIlroy”.

Rory had been dating fellow Northern Irish born Holly Sweeney, but they split up before the Open Championship that year despite being childhood sweethearts.

When Rory blew a huge lead on the last day of The Masters in April 2011, Holly was there to comfort him.

But soon after his eight-shot success in the 2011 US Open in June, Rory started attending tennis matches at Wimbledon. That was probably when he first became attracted to Caroline, but they never met at Wimbeldon.

At the time, Wozniacki was the No. 1 ranked tennis player despite not capturing a Grand Slam tournament.
