Meronk Creates Golfing History At Dunhill Links.

Adrian Meronk has created golfing history in capturing the 25th anniversary hosting of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Meronk, 33, came from two shots off the third round lead to capture his seventh pro career win and a fourth DP World Tour ‘W’ in posting a closing 68 win by two shots at 20-under on the famed Old Course at St. Andrews.

Meronk’s win is noteworthy as he’s the first Polish-born winner of the $5m Dunhill Links and he did so after a nervous 71st hole where he took a bogey ‘5’ after landing his second at the back of the famed Road Hole green from where he took three shots to get up-and-down and lead drop to just one shot.

Though no sooner had Meronk bogeyed the 17th and so to did South African Casey Jarvis playing in the final group behind Meronk, and thus see Meronk went back to leading by two.

Meronk pared the last while Jarvis, needing an eagle to tie the lead, pared the hole to post a level par 72 and share second on 18-under with Dane Nicolas Norgaard who signed off with a 68.

“It’s unreal,” said Meronk.

“As I told you before, I never usually cry but this one feels really special. I’m sorry, I’m just lost for words. To win here after ten years, after turning pro, it’s a dream come true, and it’s unusual.

“I’m sorry, I’m at a loss for words but I’m extremely happy and relieved.

“I knew it’s going to be a tough day. We knew the course was going to be very Wendy. You know, I set up myself mentally yesterday with my psychologist for the day. I knew what to expect. I had a number in my head, what I have to shoot.

“To be honest I was quite close to that number but yeah, I’m super happy I playing really solid golf. Did a great job with my caddie, Stuart. It was quite stressful at times but also fun playing with my partner. He was amazing and we had a lot of fun”.

Looking ahead Meronk was asked what does this win do for his career going ahead.

“The goal for the rest of the season was to try to get my status for next year, and that helps me a lot,” he said.

“I’m super happy that I actually got that goal, but I will have to re-evaluate my goals for the rest of the season and see what happens, but I’ll do that tomorrow and then see what happens.

“I’m super happy and super grateful to be in that position”.

Yes, double delight for Meronk as he an amateur partner Tom Chaplin, lead singer of the rock group Keane’s claimed a one stroke victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Team Championship, as Meronk becomes just the third player to win both the Individual and Team championships in the events 25-year history.

The pair finished their week on 41-under-par, one shot ahead of Scotland’s David Law and his partner Will Ahmed.

They teamed up to post an opening 64 at St Andrews, followed by a 62 at Carnoustie, a 59 at Kingsbarns and a final day 62.

With victory, Meronk joins Padraig Harrington (2002 and 2006 with JP McManus) and Matt Fitzpatrick (2024 with his mum Sue) as just the third player to win both Individual and team events at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

It was also the first time in the last six editions of the event that Chaplin has made the cut in the Team Championship, claiming victory by helping his partner with two net-eagles during the final round.

“It was a lot of fun also playing with my partner, Tom,” Meronk said after his win.

“He was amazing all week and we had a lot of, a lot of fun. He played great golf as well. We did a great job as a team. Whenever I struggle, he got my back and the other way as well. So yeah, it was so much fun and, I’m super happy for him as well.”
