Ian Poulter Crashes Off Burma Road & Now Heading To Monaco F1 Grand Prix

Ian Poulter is heading to Sunday’s Monaco Formula One Grand Prix after crashing off the Burma Road course on day two of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Joining Poulter in missing the halfway cut is double defending champion, Luke Donald with the  current World No. 6 Donald posting a second round 72 for a shock six over par tally in the cold and rainy conditions on day two of the European Tour’s flagship event.

“Even for England this weather is pretty unseasonal and it made the course play very tough because the last couple of years it’s been very warm and the ball has travelled a lot,” said Donald.

“So it was less favourable this year making it a long grind into some of the holes but in saying that the bottom line is that I didn’t play very well.

“I was nine over through 21 holes playing pretty terrible golf, really.

“But I don’t think my game is a million miles away though and sometimes these things are a lot closer than you think.  I’ve got some good time coming up with my coach back home and we’ll work on it and get ready for next week’s Memorial and the US Open.”

Donald went to World No. 1 two years in defeating fellow Englishman Lee Westwood in a play-off to win the BWM PGA.  Last year, he won the event for a second year running winning by four shots.

He commenced his defence on Thursday with a score of 78 and his worst-ever Wentworth round by four shots.

“I’ve had a bit of everything the last two days, and when I’ve missed a fairway I’ve also missed a green and the problems are compounding,” he added.

“There is no one part of my game that is really firing at the moment and because of that you are going to struggle.”

Strangely, Poulter was very upbeat after a second round BMW PGA score that was his poorest since a first round 78 in the 2010 touranment.

Poulter intends to spend the weekend firstly at Wembley for the Champions League final and then is heading to Monte Carlo for Sunday’s Monaco Formula One Grand Prix.

“I’m fine, I’m fine, don’t worry about me as I will be posting some good scores again, soon,” he smiled.

But when Poulter was asked if he was getting to like Wentworth more the Englishman responded:  “Of all the questions you ask after I’ve just had an absolute nightmare, and you’re asking me if I’m getting to like this place any more when I’ve been out there and it’s freezing cold and it’s p***ing down with rain.

“There is nothing wrong with this golf course, never has been.

“It’s just that it doesn’t suit my eye and it is very much horses for courses.   The weather made the course challenging but you can post a score out there.”

And after tweeting ‘I played like an octopus falling out of a tress’ after missing the cut in the Players Championship, Poulter said he would now tweet:  “What a wonderful weekend in store I’ve got.  Champions League final and the F1 GP in Monaco.  I’m going to have a fun, fun weekend.”

Fellow double  Ryder Cup winning colleague, Francesco Molinari is the second round clubhouse leader adding a 68 to his opening score of 70 to move to six under par.

Overnight leader, James Kingston of South Africa had yet to commence his second round.

Fifteen players had to return to the course early Friday morning to complete their first rounds after a 90-minute thunderstorm delay mid-afternoon Thursday and then being forced from the course just before 9pm local time due to poor light.
