However European Tour CEO, George O’Grady indicated he was ‘relaxed’ with the idea of a player of Rory McIlroy’s supreme talent wrapping-up the Race to Dubai title with still two events remaining.
“We are relaxed on Rory winning the Race to Dubai before this week because he’s played stupendously will in some of the big tournaments, and he’s got another Major under his belt to boot,” said O’Grady.
“The world’s No. 1 player has won the Race to Dubai, and surely that’s how it should be.”
And McIlroy then stamped his enormous talent in birding his closing five holes to win the final European Tour event of the season and his fifth Tour title in season 2012.
“I’ve said it all week, as I just wanted to finish off my season the way I thought it deserved to be finished,” said McIlroy.
“I’ve played so well throughout the year, and I didn’t want to just let it tail out timidly.
“Luke (Donald) and I didn’t get the greatest of starts, and then Justin had that incredible back nine to shoot 62, and I knew midway through the back nine I needed to do something special.
“Somehow I summoned up the energy from somewhere to make five birdies in the last five holes. Just a great way to end this tournament, a great way to end the season, and already excited about 2013.”
