Helping inspire Rory McIlroy to his second golfing gold medal was a message from Ireland’s Olympic Games gold medal winner boxer. Katie Taylor.
McIlroy revealed he received a text message from Taylor prior to heading out for the last round of the season’s final major at Kiawah Island.

Katie Taylor's golf medal winning effort helps inspire Rory McIlroy to golfing gold at Kiawah Island.
The four-times World Champion Taylor earned Ireland’s first gold medal at the 2012 Olympics with a classy defeat of Russia’s Sofya Ochigava.
“It was great of Katie to text message, as the whole of Ireland is proud of what she achieved at the London OIympics,” said McIlroy.
“She’s a great fighter, a real hero and a really nice person into the bargain.
“Hopefully, I will get the chance to catch up with her and congratulate her personnally.”
Taylor and McIlroy could well also meet in four years time under the Olympic rings flag in Rio de Janeiro when golf returns to the Summer Games for a first occasion since 1924.
Should McIlroy continue on his Major’s winning ways he faces the tough, and what will no doubt be a controversial choice, of representing GB & I or Ireland.
But for the interium McIlroy was just pleased to glow in the success of Team GB.
“There is a huge feel good factor in Great Britain and in Ireland from the Olympics,” he said.
“I obvioiusly wasn’t competing, but it is nice to put my name up alongside them. it has been a phenomenal two weeks in London.
“So I’m just am happy I was able for me to personally cap it off with a win.”
