World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler superbly boosted hopes of ending a five-month winless drought thanks to his 10-under par low round of 60 on day two of the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut.
Scheffler posted 11 birdies, including two runs of four birdies in succession on each nine, and just one bogey in his effort for a 16-under par total of 124 that is a new 36-hole low in the event on the host TPC River Highlands course.
However, needing a birdie on either of his last two holes on Friday, Scheffler could only manage pars and, alas, settled for the seventh round of 60 or lower in the 15-year history of the championship.
The venue has yielded the most rounds of 60 or lower of any Tour stop since 1997, and it’s only hosted an event since 2011. The course has seen two rounds of 59 or lower, including Jim Furyk’s 58 a decade ago and in he 2016 event so brilliantly won by Scot Russell Knox, which remains the lowest round in Tour history.

Viktor Hovland, and with a strong Norwegian following supporting the countries top golfer, grabbed an eagle and seven birdies in his 61 to be lying second two shots back of the lead at 14-under.
Scheffler is looking to capture a second PGA Tour victory this season and a first since way back in the last week of January in winning the American Express.
Since then he’s contested a dozen tournaments and finishing runner-up in three straight events starting from The Masters and where he was second to now double Masters winning Rory McIlroy.
“The conditions were really good this morning. Softer golf course, not as much wind,” said Scheffler when asked of his round.
“Going out yesterday in the afternoon, when the greens get firm out here and the wind starts to blow, it can get tricky pretty quickly. Yeah, going out this morning, you definitely had a feeling the conditions were going to be easier, so you need to go out there and try and take advantage of it.
“So, there’s a lot of opportunity out there, so who knows how the rest of the day is going to shake out? At the very least, I’m not going to be in some of the positions I’ve put myself in this year, being eight, ten shots back as the weekend starts.
“Pleased to be in the position that I’m in, and go home, get some rest, and get ready for the next couple of days”.
