Guerrier Leads The Field Taming Brutal KLM Open Weather Conditions – Hill Delighted With His Showing.

It has been Frenchman Jullien Guerrier showing the way on a brutal opening day of the KLM Open in Amsterdam.

Guerrier superbly grabbed seven birdies in a rousing six-under 65 in strong windy conditions that could have easily blown a dog off its lead on the host The International course located close to Amsterdam’s famed Schiphol Airport.

England’s Joe Dean posted a 66 to by lying second while in-form Scot Callum Hill is already knocking on the door for a hopeful third DP World Tour success after a rousing opening 68 and currently sharing fourth.

The opening day of the tournament, first staged in 1972, was delayed early on by the threat of lightning before being eventually halted for the day at 5.16pm local time due to very strong winds and with almost half the field to complete their rounds.

Guerrier won his maiden DP World Tour title at the 2024 Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucia Masters and while he could not repeat that success in 2025, he started the new campaign with two top threes in his first four starts as he missed just one of ten cuts.

His form has curtailed a little of late but he arrived in Amsterdam 16th in the Race to Dubai Rankings Delivered by DP World and was proud of the way he battled the conditions in the Dutch capital.

“I played obviously really good,” he said. “The fairway was really important because from the rough you cannot control the ball and the greens are very sloppy here, so it is tough from the beginning. I think in these conditions sometimes you need to be lucky.

“The toughest thing is to believe when you have 120 metres, for me I would have a seven iron, and normally I am 165, so 45 metres difference is huge and you try to believe and obviously you cannot control everything.”

The current World No. 143 ranked Hill had kick-started his round with back-to-back birdies and then capped his round holing a 17-foot eagle ‘3’ putt at the par-5 17th that the Scot was playing as his ninth hole.

Hill said: “I played nice on a difficult golf course and in horrible weather that made it even more difficult.   This is my second time here and every time I’ve been here it’s been horrible weather so that makes it even harder.

“I started my round really strong, missed a few putts coming in but overall, and given the conditions, I’m pretty pleased.

“Given it was so windy I am happy as it’s probably the best I’ve hit the ball for a while. I hit all the shots I wanted to even though it was so difficult to focus.“

Hill is contesting his 12th event this season and has enjoyed back-to-back second place results in the Middle East while he’s played all four rounds in the last four, including a T6th result at the Indian Open.

He said: “I have been putting well which has always been the strength of my game.  There’s been a nice long period where I have been pretty consistent, so it has allowed to take advantage of my good ball-striking run and hopefully there is enough in there to keep me in contention“.

Only two other Scots also managed to complete their rounds as defending KLM Open champ Connor Syme signed for a disappointing 73 and Grant Forrest blown off course in posting a 78.

Those Scots affected by the stoppage include Ewen Ferguson (one-under/five holes), Adam Cameron (one-under/two holes), David Law (even/five holes), Euan Walker (one-over/five holes), Scott Jamieson (three-over/six holes), Daniel Young (three-over/tWo holes), Richie Ramsay (four-over/seven holes)
