South African Sensation Set For A Triple Spanish Treat

South African sensation Yurav Premlall is set for a triple Spanish treat should he captue the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship.

Premlall, 22, set a new El Prat course record after birdieing his closing three holes for a second day running in a nine-under 63 and a shot fewer than Friday’s 64 to give himself an amazing six-shot leading cushion heading to the final round in Barelona.

The game’s No. 598th ranked player’s course record effort on golf’s ‘moving day’ will earn him a cool $50,ooo cash  windfall thanks to NEXO should no-one better Premlall’s effort over the four rounds.

As well, if Premlall should secure victory it will be a maiden DP World Tour triumph in just his 29th Tour start and earn him just a few dollars shy of a $400,000 first prize cheque ptlus there’s the huge bonus of being exempt on the Tour till the end of the 2028 season.

“It is a bit of a blur to be honest,” he responded when quizzed about his round.

“II mean that is generally what people say when a round like that comes to be honest. It was really nice, the last few days have been really solid golf tee to green as well, maybe not so good off the tee, but the putter has got hot over the last two days which I have been waiting for. My team, my dad have all put in a big effort to get me into this place, so it is just really rewarding to see it come through.

“(On his putting) It was just something small in my routine that we picked up. My coach gave me a drill to do that we have stuck to and you know, it’s all with feel for the putter, so I am glad that work has come through over the last few days.

“(On the course record) Not at all. It didn’t occur to me, not even when the putt on 17 went in, I didn’t know what the course record was for starters, I mean there is a bigger job on hand at the end of the day but that just happens to be a nice bonus that I can hopefully keep, so we will see.

“It is something I have been working towards since I got a card last year. Very few people know how rough it has been trying to get into this position, the work I have done to try and have a chance at winning, let alone whatever happens tomorrow happens, but just to be able to have such a good chance to get a job done is really rewarding.”

And the former Golf RSA No 1 qualified for 2019 South African Open Championship at 15 years old and won the Freddie Tait Cup as the leading amateur in the 2021 SA Open, his fourth appearance in the professional event.

Premlall was the winner of the 2018 Cape Town Junior Open on the Sunshine Tour Junior Series and was also member of the International Team in the 2022 Junior Presidents Cup in the United States.

He has one Sunshine Tour title to his credit – the 2024/25 Vodacom Origins of Golf – Sishen.  As well, Premlall remains the youngest player to win on the Betway Big Easy Tour. He was a 15-year- old amateur at the time.

And ‘Beef’ Johnston produced a remarkable three-hole effort late in his third round posting a 12th hole double-bogey ‘6’, a 13th hole ‘1’ and a 14th hole bogey 5 in his round of 71 to be just outside the top-50.
