He made the turn at three-under and proceeded to birdie the fourth and sixth holes on the card, that he was playing as his 13th and 15th, for a second day running to be tied sixth and also in the process ensure himself only a second Tour pay cheque after regaining full DP World Tour status at the end of last year.
He said: “Yeah, I am really pleased.
“Yesterday I started beautifully for the first ten holes and it kind of unravelled a little bit at the end of the back nine. I was playing well and I was frustrated that I didn’t take advantage of the opportunity that I gave myself yesterday.”
The Scot trails six shots adrift of American Jordan Gumberg, who leads by two shots at 14-under.
Gumberg said: “I don’t feel like I’ve done anything crazy, I don’t feel like I’m stuffing pins to two feet on every hole, I just kind of kept plugging away – pick up a shot here, pick up a shot there kind of thing.”
Next best of the Scots is David Law, posting a 66 to be sharing 18th at six-under with Calum Hill (71) at five-under, Daniel Young (70) at three-under while Grant Forrest made it five signing for 71 to be right on the cut mark at one-under
