‘Brutal’ Singapore Success Timely In DeChambeau’s Masters Preparations

Bryson DeChambeau labelled his fourth LIV Golf success as ‘brutal’ after his LIV Golf Singapore play-off victory over Canadian Richard T Lee at Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore.

DeChambeau captured a 14th pro career title but only after Lee horribly missed a tap-in par putt at the first extra hole, an this after the double-major winning American looked certain to forfeit the title after finding water off the play-off tee.

Both players had ended regulation play in the heat-wave, and rain-delayed conditoins tied at 14-under after DeChampbeau posted a closing round 68, capped by a fourth hole eagle ‘3’ and a closing hole birdie.

Lee, and who has six pro wins to his credit and chasing a maiden LIV title, birdied four of his final six holes in a 66 to set the clubhouse target before being joined by DeChambeau.

The pair returned to the 18th but when DeChambeau found water off the tee most looking on believed his chances of victory looked to have disappeared into the depths of the water hazard.

Though the 35-year-old Lee played the hole far too conservatively, no doubt believing a birdie ‘4’ or a par at worst would seal victory on a course he is very familiar having competed for many years on the Asian Tour so much so that when he faced a two-footer that would continue the play-off his ball lipped out.

DeChambeau showed his utter surprise at greenside raising both arms in the air and with a look of ‘can’t believe what has happened’ look on his face.

“A lot of emotion right now,” DeChambeau said. “Good emotion, struggling emotion, just everything that you could possibly imagine, it’s there. But a lot of joy and what a day, that was crazy.

“When I hit it in the water, the wind just took it way out of line, it was brutal. I managed to gather myself and hit a 300-yard 3-wood to get back in it.

“I had to go for it and attacked it. I feel so bad for Richard. I wanted to go and play an extra hole. Sport is brutal – you never want to see someone miss a putt like that.”

Victory for the very popular golfer comes 10 months since his last success at LIV Golf Korea while he was travelling to South Africa with LIV Golf for this week’s LIV Golf South Africa.  DeChampbeau a fortnight’s break from competiton ahead of the April 9-12 Masters and looking to make ammends for last year’s final round meltdown alongside eventual champion Rory McIlroy.

“Oh, incredible relief,” responded DeChambeau when asked if the win comes as a relief.

“I haven’t won in four rounds since the U.S. Open 2024. Being able to come through on a golf course like this that’s super brutal and demands precision on every single shot, especially with the conditions changing, I couldn’t be more happy for my team”.

Lee’s runner-up finish purse of $2.5m is easily the highest achieved by a wildcard player in a LIV event that boasted a prize purse of $20m.

“It was a short putt and I wanted to just hit it hard, and I hit it a little too hard,” Lee said.

“I think the adrenaline was pumping a little bit. Then again, I felt like I had it this week. I played really well. Hopefully next week I can try again.”

DeChambeau’s reward was $4m while Lee Westwood finishing third on 12 under to claim $1.5m.

Westwood later posted on his X account; “Good couple weeks in Asia, T18 in @livgolf_league

Hong Kong last week and nice to finish solo 3rd today here in Singapore, to the fans that came out, thank you and congratulations to the staff at Sentosa the conditions this week were amazing. “Next up, South Africa let’s go @MajesticksGC “.
