World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler could be headed for a first weekend off in well over five years after a very average two rounds at the 100th anniversary of the Genesis Invitational.
Scheffler hardly got out of first gear in posting an opening round score of 74 while his second round 68 was marginally better but it’s the bigger picture that tells the full story.
Scheffler’s two-round has him at level par in the $20m event and that is right on the cut-off mark in the 72-player premier PGA Tour event at Pacific Palisades near Santa Monica in California.
As it stands late on day two, Scottie may just make if for all four rounds and, if so, he can look back in holing a four-foot birdie putt at the ninth hole or the 18th of his second round.
If not, it will be the end of a 72-tournament run since 2022 Tour Championship the Texan last missed a halfway cut anywhere in the world.

After capturing the American Express, Scheffler has been off to a slow start producing a 73 on day one of the WM Phoenix Open but then regrouping to share third place.
While a week ago he signed for an opening 72 on route to muscling his way for T4th finish.
Scheffler was quizzed after today’s second round if there was any reason for his recent slow starts.
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: I mean, I would not say anything in particular. I think in both the last two, teeing off late is never the easiest and I’ve gotten off to slow starts.
“Like teeing off yesterday when we did was pretty challenging around this golf course. I mean, the wind and with how soft the greens were and how bumpy they can get along with wind and they’re fast, if it was last week it would have been easier because you can kind of at least try to jam it in.
“Here it’s like you can’t — you don’t want to have another three, three and a half feet coming back. You kind of got to get up there by the hole and it’s a little bit of a crapshoot sometimes whether or not it’s going to go in. And yesterday was definitely a day none of mine were going in.
“It was nice to get out this morning on some fresh greens and hole some putts and do what I needed to do in order to get to the weekend”.
