Former champion Rory McIlroy has found himself in what can only be described as a dream , all-European three-ball for the opening two rounds of the 126th US Open at Shinnecock Hills.
McIlroy has been grouped alongside double European Ryder Cup teammates in Tommy Fleetwood and Ludvig Åberg.
McIlroy has been given an early-late draw over the first two days as he chases a second major victory of the season, two months on from becomg a back-to-back winner of The Masters and 15 years on from his breakthrough victory at the 2011 US Open when he captured a maiden major on Fathers Day at the Congressional Club.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and needing to capture the US Open to become the seventh member of the elite ‘Grand Slam Club’, is also out early as the 29-year-old tees off alongside amateur Mason Howell and defending champion JJ Spaun, who could become the first player since Brooks Koepka to win back-to-back US Open titles.
Koepka is in an all-American threeball with Chris Gotterup and Players champion Cameron Young, while two-time US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau is on the opposite side of the draw as he looks to avoid a third consecutive missed cut in majors.
DeChambeau begins his tournament alongside Viktor Hovland and 2022 champion Matt Fitzpatrick, a three-time winner on the PGA Tour this season and runner-up to Bud Cauley at last week’s RBC Canadian Open.
Former US Open champions Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm have all been grouped together for the first two rounds, while another notable threeball on the late-early half of the draw sees Xander Schauffele partner Justin Thomas and Hideki Matsuyama.
Also of note is Padraig Harrington, and the oldest player in this year’s US Open field at age 51 will tee-up in a 18th US Open in the company of the one of the youngest in the field and 17-year-old American amateur Miles Russell, who had Charley Woods on the bag in qualifying for the championship earlier last week in Florida.
Joining the duo is Aussie-born 2024 Open Championship winner Cam Smith.
