Fitzpatrick Primed To Continue His Superb New Season Victory Form At Shinnecock Hills.

This week marks four years since Matt Fitzpatrick brilliantly captured the 2022 US Open with his one-shot victory at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts – the same venue where he won the U.S. Amateur in 2013.

Fitzpatrick’s effort saw him join golfing great Jack Nicklaus as the second male golfer to win a U.S Open and a U.S. Amateur title at the same venue.

Since then the Englishman has contested 15 major championships with a best finish of T4th in last year’s Open Championship.

However if there is a player who could contend this week and as we have seen for much of the year that is the 31-year-old Fitzpatrick.  Indeed, Fitzpatrick has enjoyed a first six months of the new season going so close to victory at the Players Championship ahead of being runner-up one stroke behind Cameron Young.

One week later, Fitzpatrick won the Valspar Championship for his third PGA Tour victory, carding a −11 to defeat David Lipsky by one stroke. In April, Fitzpatrick won the RBC Heritage for the second time, beating World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in a playoff with a birdie on the first playoff hole.  The week after, Fitzpatrick, partnering with his brother Alex, won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event for his third victory of the PGA Tour season.

The now World No. 4 was among the first to attend the Shinnecock Hills Media Centre and he expressed his delight in returning to a US Open as a past winner.

“Yeah, always great to be here. Obviously been a while, 2018”, he said.  “It’s actually hard to believe it’s been eight years since we’ve been here.

“I really like the golf course. It’s looking great already. Actually a little bit disappointed that they’re out there watering it right now.

“It’s obviously always nice to be coming in here with some sort of form. It’s been a great season so far. There’s just obviously a few things to tighten up to try and take it to that next level and get it across the line in the bigger events, and hopefully can kind of piece it all together this week.ouldn’t want to be putting aggressively on these greens.”

This week is Fitzpatrick’s 45th major showing and his 12th US Open.

Fitzpatrick was asked given his with such an already strong 2026 season, what he makes of what’s gone so well for you this year? Is it something you’ve done different? Is it more comfortability? What’s gone right so far?

“I’ve always liked to feel like I praise my team a lot. They put in a lot of hard work for me and try and help me become the best player I can be,” he said.

“Mark Blackburn as done a brilliant job from a technical standpoint on my swing. My iron swing is very different to what it was in the past, and that’s been the biggest change, I think, from this year compared to previous years.

“With that, that’s obviously given me more opportunities, and I know when I putt well, I can putt well and I think take advantage of those opportunities. That’s been the biggest thing.

“I think looking at the stats this season, it’s a case of hitting the ball closer, and particularly the wins, just taking advantage of that, versus previous years where I’ve not necessarily had that and having to rely on the other aspects of my game”.

Good luck this week, Matt
