Scheffler & What A ‘Colourful’ Season … A Second Green Jacket, An Orange Prison Outfit, Olympic Gold & Handed 18th Career Trophy By Red-Shirt Legend

What a 2024 season it has been for Scott Alexander Scheffler or ‘Scottie’ as the golf world knows him.

Nine victories, six more than his nearest rival.  A second Masters green jacket in three years. Back-to-back wins in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship and ending with legendary Tiger Woods donned in his traditional final round red shirt handing Scheffler an 18th career title on the 18th green in The Bahamas.

In his next start after the Players,  Scheffler had a chance to win three events in a row at the Houston Open. He was in the final group on Sunday and had a birdie putt from six feet on the 18th green to force a playoff. He missed the putt and finished in second place, one stroke behind Stephan Jäger.

In capturing a second Masters Scheffler joined Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus as the only players to have multiple victories at both the Players Championship and the Masters.  One week later, he followed up his Masters victory with a win at the RBC Heritage for his 4th win in five starts.

At the 2024 PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky Scheffler opened with a round of 67. On Friday morning prior to his second round, Scheffler was arrested by a clearly attention-seeking police officer, taken to the local police station where he was charged, ordered to change into orange-coloured attire, photographed and released in time to return to the Valhalla host course and shoot a 66.  All charges were dropped eight days later and with the police officer in question, Javar Downs heavily criticised for his over-exaggeration in reporting of the incident.  In August, officer Downs was charged with stealing $4,000 from a suspect he arrested who was carrying $10,000.

In June, Scheffler won the Memorial Tournament for his fifth win on the season. The win pushed him over $24 million in earnings for the year, breaking the PGA Tour season earnings record. Scheffler also become the first player since Tom Watson in 1980 to have won five times on the PGA Tour before the U.S. Open.

A fortnight later, Scheffler defeated Tom Kim in a sudden-death playoff at the Travelers Championship to claim his sixth win on the season. This made him the first PGA Tour golfer to win six times in a season since Tiger Woods in 2009, and the first to have won six times before July since Arnold Palmer in 1962.

In August, Scheffler tied the Le National course record with 62 to finish at 19-under and win the gold medal for his American Olympic team. Scheffler was six strokes off the lead with still nine holes to play, and stormed to gold with six inward nine birdies in a closing nine of 29 to win by one stroke over Tommy Fleetwood.

At the 2024 Tour Championship held at East Lake Golf Club, Scheffler entered as the leader in the FedEx Cup standings for third year in a row, starting again at 10-under-par. His super-impressive 30-under-par tally earned him a first FedEx Cup title of his career.  As such, it made him the first player since Tiger Woods in 2007 to record a seven-win season on the PGA Tour, and earned a $25 million in bonus prize money.  Along with the $8 million bonus for leading the regular-season standings and his $29 million official prize money, this brought Scheffler’s total on-course earnings for the season to staggering $62 million.

And to wrap-up just a sixth year in the pro ranks, a red-shirted Tiger Woods was on hand yesterday (Sunday, 8th December, 2024 to hand him a second straight Hero World Challenge trophy and with his 25-under 263 matching the touranment record at the Albany Golf Course first set by Bubba Watson in 2015.

And in winning a ninth title of 2024 Scheffler matched the record of most wins in a year.

Scheffler was asked after his win if he could reflect on his year.

“Yeah, I mean, I’m never really good at that kind of stuff. I really do my best when I stay in the present”, he said.

“I’ve had — it’s been a fantastic year, I’m very grateful for the season and grateful for the wins and it’s been a ton of fun, but at the end of the day when we go home I’m looking forward to doing stuff that’s not golf. I like to go home and live
my life and enjoy my time at home.

“I’ve had a little bit of time to reflect, but I’m not really sure how to assess it. It’s just been pretty surreal, it’s been a lot of fun. I’m just really grateful”.
