The 2012 edition of the WGC – HSBC Champions event is moving to the giant Mission Hills complex at Shenzen and close to Hong Kong.
The European Tour has the event listed on the 2012 Race to Dubai schedule as venue TBC.
However Giles Morgan, Head of Group Sponsorship with HSBC, confirmed the event is moving from the tournament’s traditional home at Sheshan in Shanghai to Mission Hills and for one year only at the request of the China Golf Association.
“It will move to Mission Hills for one year but the long term intention is to move straight back to Shanghai for 2013,” said Morgan.
“The reason it is going to Mission Hills is there is an historic contractural agreement with the PGA Tour and Mission Hills, and there was nothing we could do about that.
“From our perspective when we signed the WGC deal we didn’t know how successful it was going to become and there was always an option to take it around China to help showcase golf.
“So in the long term it will return to Shanghai in 2013.
“We had always stated our intention to Tim (Finchem) our preference to stay at Sheshan but then Mission Hills is so close to Hong Kong and we have huge amounts of clients in Hong Kong.
“But we didn’t know four years ago what we were going to create but the arrangement was what it was and we knew that beforehand, and we accept that.”
Morgan indicated HSBC was also negotiating with the PGA Tour to extend the contract in the HSBC Champions event remaining a WGC event.
The tournament will take place from 1st to 4th November, 2012.
