Lowry On Being Paid To Play Ryder Cup: “I Don’t Care Whether I Get Paid Or Not”.

Shane Lowry’s overwhelming delight in being member of last year’s victorious European Ryder Cup was there for all to see.

Indeed, if you had to single out one player in Luke Donald’s side who looked the most proud it would be Lowry as his jubulation never wavered from the time he arrived at the host Marco Simone course in Rome.

The Irishman has busted his backside to make his European debut in Padraig Harrington’s 2021 side and with Lowry’s disappointment in losing his Sunday Singles match to Patrick Cantlay inflaming his resolve to qualify automatically for Rome.

So when asked if he agreed with ‘suggestions’ in the media that the USA Ryder Cup players are going to be paid for teeing-up next year at Bethpage Park you didn’t need to be scientist in guessing what Lowry’s response would be.

“It would probably be silly of me to comment on it, really. Where would I stand on it? I can only speak for myself. I don’t really care whether I did or not, to be honest,” said Lowry in an article by good freind and colleague Brian Keogh in the Irish Independent.

“You know, the Ryder Cup is a privilege, and it’s what I work for.

“It’s what I’ve worked for for the last ten, 15 years, to be able to play Ryder Cups, anWd I’ve been fortunate to do two of them and have great experiences at them and build my brand playing Ryder Cups.

“I think, yeah, I love the tournament, and I just want to be involved. I don’t care whether I get paid or not.”

News that the American team will be renumerated is yet to be confirmed and given the millions on offer week-in and week-out on both the PGA and LIV Tour’s, it would be somewhat a shame if the PGA of America would even consider paying USA players.

And whether or not it happens and or should the European Tour follow suit really doesn’t bother Lowry..

“I really don’t think so,” he said also in the Irish Indepedent.

“I think obviously we’re The European Tour. They are The PGA of America. They are not the PGA Tour. They are The PGA of America. It’s their call, not our call. It’s up to the powers that be what happens there.”

“No, we don’t need any more motivation to go next year and win.

“Yeah, we all know in Europe that the tour lives off the Ryder Cup, and it helps run the Tour. Not that we’re happy to be a part of something – like you don’t think about it when you’re there.

“And you’re not even giving back because it’s a privilege to be there, you know what I mean,” he said when it was put to him he was giving back to the game.

“Like I’d give anything to know I’m on the team next year. I’m going to spend the next ten months stressing my head off trying to make the team.”

Lowry heads into the second round of the DP World Tour Championship having posted a no frills one-under 71.
