DJ’s Manager In Damage Control Mode After LIV Adelaide Mis-Reporting

We don’t always get it correct but a handful of Australian newspapers had Dustin Johnson’s management team in damage-control mode following Sunday’s winner’s press conference at the close of the LIV Golf event in Adelaide.

DJ is a member of the Four Aces and also including Patrick Reed, Peter Uihlein and Pat Perend with the team coming  from behind over the final round to secure the team prize at The Gange club in Adelaide.

The foursome attended the traditional victory press conference and with DJ asked, and a noisy environment, what he thought Monahan would be thinking, given the success but no sooner had the former Masters champ been asked the question and Perez jumped in saying:  “We don’t give a damn how he feels. We know how he feels about us, so it’s mutual.”

Then in a rare move the question and answer was quickly pulled by LIV officials from the official transcript.

However, the story began appearing in sports-reporting outlets outside of Australia attributing DJ for the comments.

This had his long-time agent, David Winkle issuing a correction: “Earlier today, multiple outlets reported an erroneous quote from Dustin Johnson, which contained disparaging remarks about the PGA Tour and specifically commissioner Jay Monahan.

“I spoke with Dustin from Singapore this morning at which time he emphatically denied making any such statement.

“He elaborated by saying his actual response to the question was ‘no comment’ but mentioned that others interviewed may have answered differently. Dustin remains grateful for his time on the PGA Tour and has the utmost respect for commissioner Monahan.”

Three-time PGA Tour winner Perez also confirmed to Sports Illustrated that the quote was his. He said: “DJ said nothing, it was all me. I said we don’t care what Jay thinks cause we know how he feels about us and when I say WE, I mean me. I can’t speak for the whole group.”

LIV Golf’s  SVP for Player Communications at LIV Golf, Jane MacNeille explained why, and in a very rare first, pulled both the question and the answer.

“We are trying to avoid that kind of hostility in our press conferences. The question created an eruption of chatter and everyone said ‘no comment’ but one player (Perez) and it was indiscernible as it was kind of a chaotic scene. So we decided to remove it from the transcript.”
