Scotland’s Michele Thomson and her manager Paul Lawrie now share a rare double after Thomson set a new ladies Dumbarnie Links course record on the opening day of the Trust Golf Scottish Women’s Open.
Thomson, 33, had bogeyed the first but then eagled the par-5 second and while dropping a second shot at the fifth, she grabbed seven birdies over her closing 11 holes for a Ladies European Tour (LET) career low of a seven-under par 65 to the lead the event by two shots.
Waiting for Thomson with a congratulatory fist pump was Lawrie who had been among three to set the men’s Dumbarnie inks course record of a 63 earlier this year in a pro-am event on the stunning Upper Largo layout in Fife.
Thomson said: “It was great to play that well in front of Paul. I think it’s the first time he’s seen me play for a while as I’ve been struggling.
“I didn’t see him going down the first where I bogeyed but I hit a great shot into the second and eagled it and I turned around and he’s like, ‘ooohh’. It’s just really nice to have him there and every time I hit a good shot, he was so supportive and he needs to come back”.
Thomson, who has quit golf for a time to become a police officer, had been the first female golfer back in 2018 to be signed by Lawrie’s Aberdeen-based 5StarSports agency.
Also cheering on Thomson was her father, Graeme and back on a golf course since suffering a heart attack when recently caddying for his daughter.
Thomson sent the Saltire flying high just four days after Grant Forrest broke through for a maiden European Tour victory and less than a 20-mile drive along the A915 at the Fairmont Resort.

Thomson’s best LET finish is runner-up at the 2017 Hero Indian Open and where she also set a course record and is already looking to emulate Forrest in winning on the Tour for a first time on home soil and, also like Forrest, in front of family and friends.
She said: “It’s great to have friends and family out again being able to follow us about the course.
“Also, to play that well in front of Paul, I think it’s the first time he’s seen me play for a while and I’ve been struggling, really.
Meantime – Richard Bland had waited 478 Tour events for a first victory and now five tournaments on and the Englishman leads after day one of Cazoo Classic at the London club in Kent.
Bland, 48, posted a bogey-free seven-under par 65 to lead by a shot.
The Scottish trio of David Drysdale, Calum Hill and Kingsbarns Links Daniel Young signed for four-under par 68s and with Young capping his round with three straight birdies from his third hole and then a sixth hole eagle.
